They have also signed France's Olympic center, Marieme Badiane. The Dallas Wings are trading Jacy Sheldon and the number 8 pick in the draft for DiJionai Carrington and the 12th pick, as well as the capability to swap 2026 second round picks. The Sky's acquisition of Courtney Vandersloot is official as of 10 am today. January 31st The Phoenix Mercury are acquiring Satou Sabally in a three way trade with the Dallas Wings and Indiana Fever. The Mercury will acquire Kalani Brown and Sevgi Uzun, and additionally Sabally, another all-star to pair with Diana Taurasi and Alyssa Thomas. The Dallas Wings will receive Tyasha Harris and Kiki Herbert Harrigan, as well as NaLyssa Smith and the number eight pick in the up-coming draft. The Fever will add Sophie Cunningham and the 19th pick. Nneka Ogwumike is returning to the Seattle Storm. She had her sister, Chiney, announce on national television before later confirming it. Natasha Howard is shifting to the Indiana Fever in free agency. Howard was originally drafted by the Fever, so she has a connection with a good portion of the front office. January 30th Brionna Jones is signing with the Atlanta Dream. Jones, a three time all-star and top ten pick, has spent her entire career in Connecticut. She will be teaming up with Brittney Griner in Atlanta. January 29th Courtney Vandersloot will leave the reigning champions, The Liberty, to play on a one season deal with the Chicago Sky when free agency officially opens on February 1st. Kelsey Mitchell, the Fever guard, will return to Indiana. Mitchell has played for the Fever for all eight seasons of her career. January 28th Brittney Griner, who has spent her whole career in Phoenix, signed a one year deal with the Atlanta Dream for the 2025 WNBA season. The Phoenix Mercury are trading Rebecca Allen, Natasha Cloud, and the #12 pick in the draft to Connecticut and acquiring Alyssa Thomas (a gold medalist) and Tyasha Harris in return. The Mercury are finalizing a trade to allegedly acquire Alyssa Thomas. January 26th The Las Vegas Aces and Seattle Storm finalized a trade to send 6x All-Star Guard Jewell Loyd to the Aces. Kelsey Plum ended up getting sent to the Las Angeles Sparks to make the trade work. Plum had a break out season this previous year, and Jewell Loyd was aggravated at the Storm(plus, the Storm got a couple draft picks), and the Sparks got a talented guard so it seems to make everyone happy. This is the first trade in WNBA that involves different #1 draft picks moving teams. The deal is a three way trade that also gives the Storm Li Yueru from the Sparks, and the number two pick in the upcoming draft, as well as a 2026 first round pick. Las Vegas will also get the #13 pick in the 2025 draft. The Spark got this year's number #9 pick, and a 2026 second rounder. This deal is finalized, but can not actually happen until February 1st due to league rules. January 20th Brittney Griner, an all time Phoenix Mercury great, who has spent her whole career in Arizona, is considering leaving through the free agency market. The number one pick has played for eleven seasons and is one of the only players to ever dunk in a WNBA game. January 17th Alyssa Thomas gets offered a core qualifying offer with the Connecticut Sun January 16th The Indiana Fever offer guard Kelsey Mitchell a core qualifying offer. January 14th Gabby Williams got designated as the Seattle Storm’s core player. This means she will not be an unrestricted article when her contract expires. How the Core System Works in the WNBA A core qualifying offer is a one year contract extension that puts the player at the supermax pay limit ($249,244). A team can “core” a player on their roster to prevent them from becoming an unrestricted free agent at the end of their contract. By keeping them a restricted free agent, any offer the player accepts from another team, the team the player is on can match that and prevent them from leaving the franchise. Six players have been “cored” so far this season; Gabby Williams (Seattle Storm), Satou Sabally (Dallas Wings), Breanna Stewart (New York Liberty), Kelsey Plum (Las Vegas Aces), Alyssa Thomas (Connecticut Sun), and Kelsey Mitchell (Indiana Fever). Big Name Free Agents What news will have the biggest headlines and impact on the league. Some huge stars on the market right now include Brittney Griner for the Phoenix Mercury and Nneka Ogwumike for the Seattle Storm-who have already used their core player designation on Gabby Williams. The New York Liberty's starting point guard (Courtney Vandersloot) is also on the market, and so are two of the Connecticut Sun's top talents, DeWanna Bonner and Brionna Jones. However, expect to see other major changes than just these stars. Jewell Loyd, the point guard of the Seattle Storm has requested a trade with the staff. Also, Satou Sabally announced she was done being the star for the Wings and would look for a new franchise. However, since Sabally was cored, she would have to convince the staff to trade her instead of leaving on her own will. Elena Delle Donne, the star player who lead the Washington Mystics to a WNBA Championship has been out since 2023, but is technically a unrestricted free agent, which means she could go anywhere she gets an offer. Diana Taurasi, the considered GOAT of the women's game started sending signs she was considering retirement last year, and we may not see her back in the league in the 2025 season.😭
